RESIDENTS appear to be divided over a Witney cafe’s plans to expand with the help of a crowdfunding campaign.

After launching from a mobile unit the Eden Cafe moved into Wesley Walk four years ago and now wants to expand into a neighbouring unit but needs funds to do so.

As a result the vegetarian eatery, run by Becs Hinds, has set up a crowdfunding campaign but the move has been met with a mixed reception.

Ms Hinds, originally from New Zealand, said: “We have taken on the lease for the neighbouring unit after the Renaissance vintage store closed.

“We aim to raise about £6,000 to £8,000 to convert what was Renaissance and so far out customers have been incredibly supportive - we have raised about £1,000.

“We know business rates can be quite high but to be honest it was expand or close.”

The cafe’s crowdfunding page said: “We’re calling on all people who believe in supporting local businesses, who love good coffee and who enjoy easy access to veggie, vegan and gluten-free goodies, to join us as we take Eden Café to the next level. Or next door, rather!

“We love our cosy corner, but we have long wished for a bit more room. After looking for a new home for some time, we have been given the opportunity to expand our current premises by taking on the unit next door to us at 5 Wesley Walk. We are so grateful for this chance to grow Eden Café – but we need your help to make it happen. More space will help us serve our customers better.”

Cafe owners say they could apply for longer opening hours and an alcohol licence if they can raise the cash needed to expand.

The plan is to stay open while the expansion is completed.

Support for the crowdfunding campaign is not unanimous in the town.

Spotted Witney Official said on the Spotted Witney Facebook site: “I walked past The Eden Cafe earlier today and was amazed to see that they are crowdfunding to raise money to expand their business!

“Is it only me that thinks this is laughable? If you can’t afford to expand your business why expect the people of Witney to give you money to do so?? Unbelievable!”

But Emma Dwyer said: “Thanks for the heads-up! I never knew about this cafe. As a result of your post, I’ve visited their website and now donated. I will also be paying them a visit to try out their coffee etc. It’s good to support small community businesses.”

Emma Louise Orpwood added: “So what should they do? There is 0 support for small businesses these days and I say fair play to them! Doing what they can to make there business survive. The only laughable thing is this ridiculous post!”

Renaissance vintage clothing store recently closed as a result of rising business rates.

Earlier this month John Saunders, who owns Witney Sewing and Knitting Centre, said a rise in business rates could force him and his wife to move.

An Eden Cafe extension donation dinner will take place on Thursday, May 3 at the cafe at 7pm.
