A NEW community hall for Carterton should be open this autumn.
Work has started on the £1.3m scheme, which is half-funded by developers of the new north east housing development in the town.
It is being built close to the new St John's primary school, and will have a large hall, seating 200 people, a smaller hall, meeting rooms and a kitchen, with the foyer available as a community cafe.
There are plans to open the hall in September with the production of a community play.
Other funding for the cost of the building has come from the South East England Development Agency, landfill tax credits from Wren, and Carterton Town Council.
Town mayor, Phil Scott, says it will be run by an independent management committee, and the aim is to provide 'an affordable venue for a wide range of users'.
