New Fathers 4 Justice targets Witney

CAMPAIGNING fathers have vowed to “cause mayhem” in Witney if they are not allowed to demonstrate peacefully.

In a protest, dubbed ‘Witney’s Glastonbury Festival of Fatherhood’, New Fathers 4 Justice plan to camp on Wood Green, in Woodstock Road, this weekend.

The group believes more than 150 protesters from similar organisations across the country will flock to the town on Saturday evening, before leaving the camp on Sunday to protest outside Prime Minister David Cameron’s house, in Dean.

Witney Town Council has already said camping on the public green would be breaking the law.

Co-ordinator Nigel Ace — known as Captain Equality — said: “It was going to be quite low key, but the authorities are kicking up a bit of a fuss about us camping on the green.

“It would be totally peaceful and clean. We will supply our own toilets and food, and will only be there overnight. We have told the council that if they stop us from camping there, we will disperse all over the countryside, in David Cameron’s constituency, and cause mayhem. We will go on bridges, cause havoc on the roads. Anything to cause outrage we will do to get ourselves noticed.”

Mr Ace, 42, from Bristol, has written to Mr Cameron, whose constituency is Witney, through his MP Liam Fox, inviting him to discuss the matter of equal status for fathers. He said that if the Prime Minister did not meet the group, they would keep coming back.

He said: “We will come back again if he doesn’t meet us this weekend. We will be back again and again, and the Witney constituents will be fobbed off with us.

“He can come and join us at the campsite. We will give him a free sausage and a burger, and we can have a nice discussion together out in the open. We have written to Mr Cameron, and there has been no response. So the only response we can give is to give pressure by coming to Witney.”

Downing Street could not confirm where Mr Cameron would be at the weekend for security reasons.

Mr Ace, who has a seven-year-old daughter, added: “We want children to have a balanced upbringing. It’s for fathers’ 50/50 status that will stop the majority of cases going to court. We want to give dads equality.”

Campaigner Samantha Haynes, from Wootton, will be at the protest dressed as Wonder Woman. She said: “I feel that fathers should have equal opportunities and I am going through the same as the majority of fathers.”

Sharon Groth, Witney Town Council’s clerk, confirmed that the police would be called if Wood Green became a campsite. She said: “We haven’t had a formal request for New Fathers 4 Justice to use the land. We have bylaws on Wood Green, which state we don’t allow people to camp there.

“So if people did approach us, we wouldn’t be able to give them permission, as we won’t go against our bylaws.

“Wood Green is a residential area, with no toilet facilities. So it’s not really an ideal place to camp in.”

Chief Inspector Geoff Robinson, of Thames Valley Police, said the force would facilitate lawful and peaceful protest. He said: “We have had a New Fathers 4 Justice protest in Witney before, which passed without incident and with minimal disruption. The town council has been made aware of the protesters’ intention to camp on Wood Green, and we are expecting a small group of people to protest at the Prime Minister’s home nearby.

“New Fathers 4 Justice is a national campaign, rather than a local issue, and we have continued to encourage NF4J to address concerns through the House of Commons, rather than locally at Mr Cameron’s private residence.

“Mr Cameron’s representatives have been made aware of the plans, and our resourcing and response will be proportionate to maintain order and protect property.”

New Fathers 4 Justice was formed in September 2008, in the wake of Fathers 4 Justice disbanding.

And these cretins are showing that they can be responsible parents by doing this? Do they expect us to support their cause by making statements such as these: 'We will be back again and again, and the Witney constituents will be fobbed off with us.'

Let's hope the police earn their wages this weekend if these idiots try to cause trouble in Witney.

Why do you call these people cretins? From what I can gather they do have a valid point to make and I think they basically love their children. The idea of them dressing up a superheroes is also pretty funny.

Hopefully there will be no damage caused and nobody will get hurt....

I live very close to this, and obviously want things to go without problems - but I also respect the right to peaceful protest... (and I hope the protesters respect the rights of ours - to peace).

The above comment about the police getting involved sounds like you actually want it to kick off - G20 style. Thats the last thing residents or these people will want. My opinion is that if the police stay out of it, things will probably go more peacefully.

I just hope the three pigeons thinks ahead and gets a late license.

Maybe they should camp on Witney Meadows down by the Windrush nr where the CLR is planned, I don't think the council would mind about unauthorised use of this land!

Sam_e, you have obviously read a different article to me if you believe what you have said. This group do NOT do peaceful protest. They climb up motorway gantries and stop traffic at rush hour, they scale walls at Buckingham Palace and cause a security alert. I could go on but you can quite easily google and see for yourself what this group actually does.
.
In this story they are quoted as saying: "We will come back again if he doesn’t meet us this weekend. We will be back again and again, and the Witney constituents will be fobbed off with us." They actively want to ANNOY the residents of Witney and have openly admited that. They have also said "we will disperse all over the countryside, in David Cameron’s constituency, and cause mayhem. We will go on bridges, cause havoc on the roads. Anything to cause outrage we will do to get ourselves noticed."
.
These 'cretins' want to cause the residents of Witney trouble. They want to stop you and I from doing what should be our right of travelling down the town's roads. Will they do the same to the emergency services I wonder? This group has already had to disband once due to the actions of its followers so please do not tell me that they are peaceful and more importantly fit to have any access to their children.
.
And finally, I do not want it to kick off 'G20 style' but what I expect of TVP is to deal with this in the appropriate way.

Good luck to thease people I hope things go peacefully and you get a good outcome.

I'm a mum of two and sometimes I'm ashamed to be a women when I look at other mothers who think is ok to stop their children dads see them with no good reason. Fathers should automatically get 50/50 rights.

To all thoses that dissagree with this group I ask you one question....

Is there anything you wouldn't do for your children just so you could see them????

I know I would go to the ends of the earth for mine and that's all this group are doing for there children.

Calling them cretins is incredibly short-sighted. I'd challenge any father who was denied access to their children to simply sit back and take it. If I was in their position I'd probably do the same. They're just focussing on Witney as it's topical and now high-profile since David Cameron became PM.
From my perspective, the importance of not having someone camping on Wood Green pales into insignificance compared to a father being denied the right to see their children.

It's amazing how people are condoning this group breaking the law to get what they want! It's interesting that their website doesn't show any of the belief's or aims. I wonder why that is? When you look at their official Facebook group, their latest comment is: 'COMING SOON THE CONTROVERSIAL NEW CAMPAIGN from Fathers 4 Justice. More news shortly...'
.
Why should a peaceful group be launching a CONVTROVERSIAL NEW CAMPAIGN? For those that are happy for them to come to Witney, let's see what you think if this new campaign is launched on our doorsteps and causes trouble.

Admittedly, it could all go wrong and we could have horrible things happening on wood green, but hopefully that won't happen.

I'm sure there is zero benefit in 'Fathers for justice' damaging anything or anyone, as it will not do their cause any good at all.

And just because they have to resort to something that is illegal doesn't mean that they are bad people. Sometimes you have to break the law to be heard - and sometimes if the law prosecutes when no one is hurt and no damage is done, then sometimes the law can be an ****.

In terms of "controversy"; doesn't it just mean that some people will be okay with it, while others will not? This thread shows how true that is.

Have they not realised that Mr Cameron is currently out of the country? Maybe that is why they have received no responses?!?

Is it good use of Police time or Witney Town Council resources to seek to move them off the Green? Aren't they just saying they want to protest in our democratic society for a short time? If we resist, then they get the publicity they seek and encourage others to do the same. Ignore it, and they'll go. At most, just give them notices to quit.
