A NEW reception area and changing rooms have opened at Witney's Windrush Leisure Centre following a £1.5m revamp.
Work at the centre is almost complete a year after building contractors moved in, and the doors have opened to the new swimming pool changing rooms, which include both single sex and mixed areas.
The changing rooms are part of a semi-circular shaped 442sqm extension, designed with a 'nautical' theme, and the reception area has been rebuilt to give a 'bright, spacious' feel.
Changes have also been made to the Witan Way centre's car park, including the introduction of a one-way system, a lay-by for coaches to drop-off and pick-up schoolchildren, and a car-free area outside the reception.
The car park is also due to be resurfaced before builders officially complete the project by the end of September.
Work has been carried out as part of a £10m investment scheme drawn up by West Oxfordshire District Council, which is responsible for the district's leisure centres.
Projects started in 1998, and have included new centres in Carterton and Chipping Norton.
Tony Walker, the council's cabinet member for leisure, said: "Wheelchair users, parents with pushchairs, and anyone with mobility difficulties will find the changing rooms more accessible.
"Getting around the centre is also easier, with a new lift to the first-floor cafe and viewing galleries."
The centre, which also includes The Mill gym, squash courts, and sports hall, is run by Wycombe Leisure, on behalf of the district council.
Manager, Ben Border, said about 400 people made a splash in the centre's swimming pool every day and the new changing areas were a great improvement for users.
He said: We've already had a lot of favourable comments about the new facilities.
"The extension brings in a lot of natural light and mush more space. It's a much better environment."
