MORE than one thousand people have been arrested thanks to Witney's CCTV system, according to Thames Valley Police.
The 24 cameras, which were installed in 2002, have also helped with lost children and getting assistance to people who have fallen. Retailers and licensees in the town centre are able to alert each other and the CCTV operators about incidents through walkie talkies, which has stopped many problems escalating, as well as providing evidence for police prosecutions.
Barry Norton, leader of West Oxfordshire District Council and chairman of the CCTV management group, said: "The link between the control room and retailers has been a great success, and has helped to promote safety and peace of mind for everyone."
