Reading demise could boost U's
Oxford United could recapture some of their 'lost' floating fans following Reading's relegation from the Barclays Premier League.
The Royals' two-year stay in the top flight came to an end on Sunday when their 4-0 victory at Derby on the final day proved insufficient after Fulham snatched a late winner at Portsmouth to save themselves.
Steve Coppell's men now drop into the Championship and they are gearing up to the inevitability of gates falling next season.
While Oxford United are not in the business of getting pleasure from their near-neighbours' misfortunes - unless it happens to be Swindon Town! - they may nevertheless benefit from Reading's relegation.
When the U's dropped out of the Football League two seasons ago, the Oxford Mail received dozens of letters and e-mails from local football fans saying they would no longer go to watch Oxford and would instead travel to Reading.
But the prospect of now watching Preston, Blackpool and Swansea at the Madejski Stadium may not be so enticing.
Oxford United's general manager, Mick Brown, said he knew there were some football followers - especially those living midway between the two, in places like Wallingford and Didcot - who had switched to Reading because of the attraction of watching Premiership football.
"It's difficult to know how many have done that," he said.
"It's possible that those who go along on a casual basis and pick the big matches there will change and come and watch us again.
"Certainly, it will be less of an attraction to go to Reading now they are out of the Premier League and maybe we will win some of them back, but that also depends on how successful we are."
But Paula Martin, chairman of STAR, the supporters' trust at Reading, is not convinced.
"Gates will drop, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised if they still hold up around the 20,000 mark," she said.

What load of rubbish! An article posted purely because there is no other news about our club at this moment in time. If there are any 'former' Us fans that decided watching Reading in the Premiership was more worth than supporting us at a time when we need it most im sure they will probably stay with them! After all they are still a Championship club. Im sure we will pass them on the way up in a few years :)

I cant stand Reading, and i cant stand fans that switch teams just because one is doing better than the other. Reading and Reading fans in my opinion can stay away.

The article makes a valid and serious point. I'm not a reading fan, but if I were I'd be rushing back to Oxford to see the awesome specticle that is the Blue Square Premier league. Championship, your having a laugh.
In no way would watching creosote dry (on your impressive fence from homebase) be more exciting. Nope. Nothing could beat the thrill that is Histon on a cold Tuesday in January.
My only concern is that such magic will be gone soon, for with such an impressive setup you will sure to be promoted back to the heady heights of the football league. Champions by Christmas I'd say.

Coming from the Henley area i have known many people who support either Reading and Oxford.i have never known anyone change clubs due to either club being relegated or promoted. If they do they are not proper fans and not worth bothering with. As a Reading supporter i could not imagine worse than watching Oxford. As far as derby games go i see Oxford as the team i dislike the most.

Remember that Reading usually got around 3,000 fans in the old third division. Where the hell do they get 20,000 now?? There not loyal fans like Oxford supporters. We got 10,000 for a conference game. We're a bigger club then Reading.Fact.

At least we lasted three seasons in the top flight! With a bit of luck Coppell will leave as will most of "The Plastics" best players and "The Buscuit Men" will go into free fall. We've got a Reading fan where I work who also "supports" Arsenal..Tells you everything you need to know about so called Reading "fans"!

"Floating fans" can run and jump. You can't support Reading (for one season) then come back to Oxford, that is wrong on so many different levels. Glory supporters should be shot!! If you've gone to Reading stay there!!

History winning the milk cup wow who do you think you are Barcelona !! We have been in the league for a lot longer than you and have won more league titles. Also if Reading are plastic cockney fans i think you should buy an atlas as Geography as well as football are not your strong points.
