MOTORSPORT: Raikkonen defies pain to come a brave third
10:00am Wednesday 25th September 2013 in Sport
KIMI Raikkonen drove through the pain barrier to finish third for the Enstone-based Lotus team in the Singapore Grand Prix.
Suffering from a bad back, Raikkonen put in a brave display around the tight confines of the Marina Bay Street Circuit; one of the most gruelling races of the season.
Raikkonen, who is joining Ferrari next season, remains in fourth place in the drivers’ world championship standings on 149 points – now just two points behind Lewis Hamilton.
His Lotus teammate Romain Grosjean felt pain of a different kind after a forced retirement on the 37th lap, due to lack of engine pressure, and remains eighth in the standings.
The team are in fourth place in the constructors’ championship on 206 points.
Raikkonen said: “I think third was the maximum we could achieve.
“It’s been a difficult weekend, so to finish on the podium is a good result.
“The problem with my back hasn’t been ideal. “I have some time to recover before Korea and we were pretty strong there last year, so let’s see what we can do next time out.”
EYNSHAM’S Dave Messenger added to the list of Team Darnells Racing successes in 2013 recording a third-place finish in Class E of the Alfa Romeo Championship on Sunday.
Messenger finished behind championship leader James Ford and second-placed Aberdeen driver Dave Peedie.
This follows his a win at Brands Hatch two weeks ago and a second place at Thruxton in August.
With only two races left at Silverstone on the October 19, Messenger could finish in the top three, despite having competed in just seven of the eleven rounds.
