MOTORSPORT: Powell relishes title showdown
5:10pm Wednesday 23rd October 2013 in Sport
Chipping Norton’s Alice Powell is confident she will hold her nerve as she battles it out in this weekend’s F3 Cup championship title decider at Snetterton.
Powell had led the standings since round one, but a double win for Alex Craven at Donington Park saw him displace her from the top by three points.
He and Powell, once the obligatory three dropped scores are accounted for, are level on points.
Powell is relishing the finale: “I’ve been in a championship fight before,” she said.
“When I did Formula Renault BARC we had problems in qualifying and we didn’t qualify where we wanted to be.
“But I went out and got a win and a second in the races.
“I’m as calm as anything, it’s not a problem for me to have the pressure of winning the title.
“I quite like it and I’m looking forward to the weekend.”
After crashing out twice on her last visit to Norfolk, Powell will be hoping for better luck.
If either Powell or Craven take a double victory they will be crowned champion. If Tristan Cliffe wins both and neither Craven or Powell picks up more than 35 points, he will instead take the crown.
If Craven and Powell match each other’s weekend, Craven will need to pick up one of the extra points on offer for fastest lap or pole in race one to be crowned champion.
In the event of a tie it will come down to race wins, and Powell has five to Craven’s three.
Cliffe currently has five victories, and he will need to win both races to cause a three-way tie, thus giving him the title.
1 A Craven 375pts, 2 A Powell 372, 3 T Cliffe 330, 4 L Hamilton-Smith 273, 5 D Karaskas 252, 6 M Harrison 247, 7 H Chart 149, 8 N Robinson 143, 9 O Rae 129, 10 S Wiltshire 125.
