Chipping Norton trainer Charlie Longsdon made a perfect start to 2014 with his first two runners of the new year, No No Mac and Wadswick Court, giving him a double at Southwell on Monday.

No No Mac had to be kept up to his work by Noel Fehily to beat Ampleforth by a length and three-quarters to record his first win over timber in a novices’ hurdle over an extended two and a half miles.

Longsdon said of the 8-11 favourite: “It was a good first hurdle win for him, but it was heavy ground and we will take our time with him before running again.

“His main aim this season will be the Grass Roots final at Haydock in April.”

Wadswick Court made it two wins from as many starts over hurdles with a brilliant success in the two-mile novices’ contest.

Fehily made all the running on the 5-4 favourite, who galloped home by six lengths from Earth Amber.

Longsdon said: “He was giving a stone in weight to the second horse and he quickened away from it very nicely.

“He will now have to be stepped up in grade.”

The double took Long-sdon on to 61 winners for the season, and past last season’s total prize-money haul.

Fehily, meanwhile, mov-ed on to the 95-winner mark, and within sight of a first century.

The prolific duo had rounded off last year by teaming up to strike with No No Bingo at Haydock.

The seven-year-old battled on gamely to beat The Jugopolist by half a length in a “fixed brush” handicap hurdle over two and a half miles.
