Witney got 2014 off to the perfect start with a hard fought 2-1 home victory against Southgate 2nd in South Clubs Women’s League Division 3A on Saturday.
The hosts had to hold off a number of attacks from the visitors before they began to find their passes.
They kept up the pressure which was rewarded when they broke the deadlock.
A neat ball back from the baseline by Lucy Reading found forward Charlotte Manning, who fired past the keeper.
Witney doubled their lead when they broke at pace after intercepting a Southgate attack.
Reading dribbled the ball around several defenders and took advantage of the space created by fellow attacker Izzy Hayes to slot the ball home.
After the break, Southgate tried to get back in the game and cut the deficit with a close-range strike.
However, some resolute defending ensured Witney held on for a deserved success.
On Saturday, they travel to Hampstead & Westminster 3rd.
