Sophie Carter helped Belgrave Har-riers to silver at the South of England Women’s Six-Stage Road Relay Championships.
The 34-year-old, from Woodstock, ran the anchor leg at Milton Keynes and was just able to hold off the challenge of Bedford & County’s Rebecca Murray to take second.
Carter ran the 5.053km course in 20mins 30secs to see Belgrave home in 1hr 52mins 21secs, with Bedford third in 1.52.31. Aldershot, Farnham & District won it in 1.43.31.
In the men’s 12-stage event, Steve Naylor, from Cassington, suffered agony as he missed out on bronze by just over a minute with his Bedford team.
Naylor clocked 24.29 for his 7.664km circuit, the fastest ‘long’ leg by a Bedford athlete. His team completed their 12 legs in 4.06.31, with Newnham & Essex Beagles third in 4.05.22 and Aldershot winning in 3.59.26.
Witney Road Runners’ Tony Lock was the second vet 40 man home at the Carterton 10K. He finished fifth overall in 36mins 32secs.
Meanwhile, Chipping Norton School’s Megan Humphreys recorded a top-50 finish in the English Schools’ Cross Country Championship at Donington Park.
She finished 42nd in the intermediate girls’ race over 3.5km in 13mins 43secs.
