A superb second round saw Paul Simpson win the Burford Pro-Am for the seventh time.

The West Berks professional, who lives in Witney, carded a nett 68 with amateur partner and clubmate Tony Cove-ntry.

Their 140 total was four shots better than nearest challengers David Osborn and Peter Oakes, from Surrey’s West Hill.

They edged out Michael O’Connor and Bob Lander (Lambourne) on countback.

Trevor Smith was one shot back in fourth on home soil alongside professional Mark Booth (Colm-worth).

The top local pairing was Oxford’s Adam Wootton and David Summers (Burford), who finished in sixth place on 149.

Burford’s greenkeepers were the unsung heroes, as they pulled out all the stops to ensure heavy rain on Friday, which left standing water on the greens, did not delay the start.

Although blustery showers made scoring difficult on Saturday, play was not interrupted.
