Witney's Janette Cardy is targeting success in the world championships in Edmonton, Canada in August after being crowned European champion.

She completed the 1km open water swim and the 5km run in a combined time of 38mins 28secs, holding off fellow Briton Judy Prior to land the 40-44 age group crown in Cologne, Germany.

Three years ago Great Britain international Cardy, who runs a fitness company in Witney, had a stroke.

But she battled her way back and finished fifth in the London Aquathlon World Championships in London’s Hyde Park last September.

And she is hoping for similar success in Canada.

“I was pretty chuffed,” said Cardy.

“But more than that I feel very motivated and driven to race well at worlds and do my very best.

“I am training harder than ever.

“I love it and feel grateful to be given a second chance.”
