Tower Hill Ladies edged to a 4-3 win at Fleet Town Ladies in the first round of the Southern Region League Cup on Sunday.
However, they were breathing a sigh of relief when Jess Witcher’s attempted clearance hit the bar at the death.
Tower took the lead on eight minutes, when Sophie Grimson’s left wing cross found Samantha Bevan-Talbot, who smashed the ball into the top of the net.
They doubled the lead on 17 minutes when Emma Proctor converted Sarah Snowdon’s corner.
It was 3-0 on 27 minutes when Fleet’s Madeline LLewellyn-Jones put through her own net while trying to clear.
However, a Joanne Harfield strike and a Katie James penalty brought Fleet back into the contest.
Tower regained their earlier dominance and on 55 minutes made it 4-2.
A pass from Grimson picked out Bevan-Talbot who took the ball around a defender before slotting it past the keeper.
But Fleet would not give up with Harfield scored her second on 65 minutes to set up a nerve-jangling finish.
Fleet kept pressing and Tower were relieved when Witcher’s sliced clearance rebounded clear off the bar.
