Witney inflicted Chippenham’s first defeat of the season with a shock 13-6 away success at the runaway South West 1 East leaders on Saturday.

The visitors had to withstand severe pressure from the hosts before imposing some of their own, which saw Chippenham prop John Tur-ner being sin-binned on 18 minutes.

Chippenham went ahead with a penalty from Sam Saunders, before Witney centre Jacob Thomas was sin-binned.

He was soon joined by teammate Gareth Campbell, with Saunders making it 6-0 with a penalty.

Despite being one man light, Witney kept going forward and were only denied a try by a slippery ball.

They came out in determined mood for the second halfand cut the deficit with a penalty from full back Phil Thomas.

The visitors piled on the pressure and were rewarded for their efforts.

Scrum half Campbell found a gap in the Chippenham defence before going over to give Witney the lead. Thomas added the extra points.

Witney kept Chippenham on the back foot with Phil Thomas stretching their adv-antage with another penalty for 13-6 on 66 minutes.

Chippenham did have their moments and a try looked certain late on when Saunders headed for the line, only to be denied by some superb Witney defending.

As the game went into the closing stages, it was Witney who finished the stronger as they held on for a memorable victory.

They are without a game this weekend.
