Second-placed Tower Hill failed to build on a lead as they were thumped 4-1 at Stony Stratford in Southern Women’s League Division 1 North on Sunday.

Looking to knock Banbury United off top spot, whom they trail on goal difference, but with the same points, they started well.

And their hard work paid off when they took the lead on 30 minutes following a mistake by Stony keeper Ellie Fenables.

The stopper mishandled a cross and the lurking Abi Currie headed home.

Stony responded in devastating style, with the hosts’ top-scorer Siobhaun Layne levelling before Charlotte Jones gave them the lead.

Layne completed a double to leave a shell-shocked Tower Hill 3-1 down at the break.

Tower managed to strike the bar on several occasions but failed to get back in the game.

And it got worse when Stony wrapped it up with a penalty, Laura Whittle burying her spot-kick into the bottom corner.

Tower Hill complete their season on Sunday at home to Marlow at West Witney (ko 2pm).

Meanwhile, Mollie Farr scored a late winner as Tower Hill Vixens won 1-0 at Wantage Town in the Oxford Mail Girls League Under 15 League Cup.

Farr struck three minutes from time with a cool finish past the advancing keeper.
