WITNEY recovered from a ten-point deficit to beat Swindon 13-10 at a blustery Greenbridge Road on Saturday.

Fly-half George Lewis kicked eight points in the second half and No 8 Charlie Bennett went over as Witney battled back from 10-0 down to move up to sixth place in South West 1 East.

The windy conditions and slope gave both sides an advantage for 40 minutes and Swindon made the most of it in the first half.

Adam Westall’s penalty gave them the lead after ten minutes of play, before their pressure took its toll on the Witney defence and Jordan Sheppard found space to dive over.

Westall added the extras to make it 10-0.

The hosts’ pack began to tire and on 50 minutes Witney got off the mark.

After winning a penalty, the visitors elected for a scrum and the pack drove their way over the try-line for Bennett to ground the ball.

Lewis converted to make it 10-7.

The Witney fly half then pulled the sides level with a penalty.

But just when they thought they had the bit between their teeth they were forced to defend manfully as Swindon found a second wind.

The crucial moment came on 71 minutes when Swindon full back Oliver Wilson was sin-binned for not releasing and Lewis kicked the three-pointer to win the match.

Witney are next in action on Saturday when they welcome Trowbridge to Hailey Road.

In the BB&O Premier, Chipping Norton recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 27-0 victory at home to Wheatley.
