WITNEY Mills were thumped by 199 runs against Cherwell League Division 4 newcomers Westbury in their season opener.

Westbury declared on 298-4 in just 47 overs, thanks in part to an opening partnership of 91 from brothers William and Tom Gurney, the former hitting an impressive 134.

The total proved well beyond Mills as they crashed to 99 all out, with their cause only helped by an astonishing 48 extras.

Only one of the Mills batsmen reached double figures.

Great & Little Tew 2nd got off to a winning start in Division 2, posting a three-wicket home win against Wolverton Town.

Matthew Warner (3-16) and Robbie Shurmer (3-50) combined to dismiss Wolverton for 110. Tew were thankful to Matthew Clark (46) as they reached 111-7 to secure victory.

Oxford Downs won by three wickets away to Oxford 2nd, restricting the home side to 180-7, thanks to Will Watts’s 3-22.

Watts (46) and Tom Costley (42no) saw Downs to victory in the 29th over.

Sandford St Martin held out for a draw away to Cropredy.

Simon Smith took 6-51 as the hosts set a target of 233. Jim Howe hit 89 in reply, but Sandford closed on 204-7 .

Shipton-under-Wychwood 2nd had to settle for a rain-affected draw at home to Blewbury & Wallingford.

Jon Hartley top-scored with 43 not out as they set 188-8, but Blewbury’s reply was cut short at 162-7.

Oxford Downs 2nd lost by six wickets at home to Great Brickhill 2nd.

Paddy Daniel top-scored with 37 in Downs’s 140 all out, but Brickhill made light work of the target, reaching 143-3 in the 34th over.

Great & Little Tew 3rd clinched the narrowest of victories against hosts Challow & Childrey 3rd in Division 6.

Tew posted 166-9 in 48 overs, but they were thankful to Carl Haggett’s 3-39 and Prescott’s 3-40 as the hosts fell one run short on 165 all out.

Witney Mills 2nd held Westbury 2nd to a draw in Division 8, despite Tom Boardman smashing 188 for their opponents.

Boardman’s big ton, plus 71 from Mike Markham, helped Westbury to 354-8 in their 45 overs, but Mills closed on 155-6 thanks to Mike Williams’s 88.
