OXFORD United believe they remain firmly in the running to sign Chris Maguire, despite being kept waiting on a decision for his contract offer.

The forward was initially asked to make a decision within 14 days of the deal being tabled – which expired a week ago.

Maguire spent two spells with the U’s last season, initially on loan before returning on a short-term deal in January.

He struggled to make an impact at times, but finished strongly and scored four of his five goals during the final month of the season to help the side claim automatic promotion.

Head coach Michael Appleton remains keen and is in regular contact with the 27-year-old, who played under him at Portsmouth.

While a quick answer is beneficial for the club’s planning, there is no desire yet to pull out of the race.

Appleton said: “I still speak to Chris every three or four days.

“He’s not daft, he’s weighing up his options.

“We are well and truly in the mix, I can assure you.

“The one thing we have got is Chris has had a good look at the club and knows the potential.

“We’re in a different league now against different teams with better pitches and stadiums.

“I have to respect the fact he’s got a young family that lives in Scotland and it’s got to be right for him.

“I appreciate that and it’s a very transparent relationship. We don’t mince our words with each other.”
