OXFORD United voted in favour of the revamped EFL Trophy measures at yesterday's Football League AGM.

It will see Premier League academy sides take part in the rebranded Johnstone's Paint Trophy, which starts with a group stage.

The measures were voted in by a majority, but it was understood to not be unanimously approved by the club representatives at the AGM in Portugal.

And United's statement revealed their board were also split, with chairman Darryl Eales not in favour.

It read: "The Oxford United board's vote was tight and while chairman Darryl Eales was against the proposal, overall it was decided to support the League’s appeal to explore ways to secure the cup’s future and Darryl respected the overall vote."

United stressed the decision was made for an initial one season pilot which will not be renewed if it is unsuccessful.

The new format has not been warmly welcomed by many supporters - something the club acknowledged.

United said: "We understand that many supporters will be surprised by this and some will disagree, however following careful consideration and discussion, overall the board decided it was important to support and explore ways to ensure the competition can survive."
