PHIL Edwards was delighted to mark his first Oxford United appearance with a victory.

The right back produced a polished display despite only meeting his new teammates 24 hours before kick-off after agreeing a season-long loan from Burton Albion.

Edwards was understandably thrilled with Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Peterborough United and happy with his contribution.

“It was a great way to start my time here,” he said.

“Peterborough are a really good side and we knew we had to stand firm against them and we did that.

“Their movement is good and we knew we could be up against it, but we really dug in.”

Nobody put their body on the line more than Edwards, who was sent crashing to the ground after blocking one Posh free-kick with his face.

“I got smacked right in the mush with that one, but that’s what I am there for,” he said.

“I will always give 110 per cent and will not leave anything out on the pitch.

“It was a great result and the boys are delighted.”

Edwards is now hoping United can build on their success.

“We have got quality all over the pitch,” he said.

“We have scored two good goals today and maybe before it was the final ball that was letting the side down so if we can keep improving that we can be ok.

“The fans were terrific and got right behind us and certainly helped us today.

“The league is tight and if you can be consistent you will be in the thick of things.

“Hopefully we can build on this display going into the next game.”
