JOSH Ruffels is aiming to step up and become a first-team regular over the course of his new contract at Oxford United.

The midfielder, whose deal was due to expire at the end of the season, has signed a deal which will keep him with the club until summer 2018.

Ruffels has established himself as a trustworthy squad player under head coach Michael Appleton.

But the 23-year-old has found it difficult to get a run in the side, with Saturday’s 4-0 win at Chesterfield his first Sky Bet League One start since October.

Ruffels is up against stiff competition for a place in central midfield, with skipper John Lundstram and rising star Ryan Ledson among those standing in his way.

But the former Coventry City trainee wants to use the new contract to kick on and reach the next level.

He said: “I’m really delighted with the new contract.

“It’s been quite tough and frustrating to be in and out of the team, but we’ve got a good squad and I’m just glad to be a part of it.

“There comes a point where you want to start pushing to become a first-team regular.

“I’ll keep pushing and see how I get on next season, hopefully I get that first team spot.”

Despite the lack of opportunities, the former Kidlington schoolboy never gave serious consideration to turning United down.

“Not at all, I’ve been really happy here,” he said.

“My game time has been limited and the thought of going out on loan was in my mind, but I think I’ve made the right decision now.”

Appleton described the tactically flexible Ruffels as a “diamond” in December and was delighted to keep him for another season.

He said: “What Ruffs gives us is the option of playing in various positions.

“When you have to work to a budget you have to think about those things.

“It’s a key signing for us.

“It will probably go under the radar, but as far as I’m concerned he’s an integral member of the squad.”
