SIMON Eastwood starred yet again but the Oxford United goalkeeper was gutted not to claim a clean sheet as ten-man Peterborough United struck a consolation goal in stoppage-time.

United’s No 1 made four outstanding saves, but his resistance was broken in the 91st-minute by Craig Mackail-Smith’s fortuitous shot which crept in at the far post.

It did not change the result, as the U’s won 2-1 to bounce back into the fringes of the Sky Bet League One play-off race after two successive defeats.

But anyone who did not know the scoreline would have thought the visitors had lost the game when hearing the post-match thoughts of United’s players and staff.

Eastwood said: “It was a strange game.

“The performance wasn’t up to our standards. I had quite a busy afternoon and to concede so late hurts a little bit.

“I suppose when we get to Monday morning we’ll get over it and the three points are the main thing.

“I think we were the better side, but they had chances as well.”

He added: “We’re quite far off (the play-offs) so we don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves.

“We’re definitely the underdogs.”

No-one deserved the clean sheet more than Eastwood, whose display was up there with his best in what has been a terrific season for him.

The 27-year-old’s favourite save was his first – an instinctive one-handed effort to keep out a powerful close-range effort from Leo Da Silva Lopes in the ninth minute.

He said: “I remember a ball across the goal. I didn’t really see it so I just threw a hand up.

“Luckily it was a strong hand and it hit me.”

The game was Eastwood’s 50th for United – some achievement for a player whose debut was only last August.

It was a milestone the No 1 enjoyed as he remains set to hit his target of playing every minute this season.

He said: “I’ve always been in and out in my career and never nailed down a first-team spot.

“To play every single game is something I definitely wanted to do at the start of the season.

“I’ve got to 50 and there’s still a lot more to go. I’m proud of it and hopefully I can keep it going.”
