AN excellent performance on the cross-country course helped Charlotte Bacon finish eighth at the Equi-trek Bramham International Horse Trials.

The rider, from Shipton-under-Wychwood, and Last Touch were one of only four combinations to finish the tough course inside the time in the U25 CCI*** competition.

It took her from 25th place after the dressage phase to eighth.

Bacon held the position in the show jumping, where she incurred just three time penalties in a clear round.

The cross country round might have been even better, but after starting the ride Last Touch was held while a damaged fence was repaired.

Bacon said: “It took us a little time to find our jumping rhythm again once we were restarted.

“So we were thrilled to be inside the time, which catapulted us up the leaderboard.”

Last Touch is now due to have some downtime before Bacon prepares him for Burghley Horse Trials in September.

It will be the pair’s first CCI**** appearance.
