CHARLIE Longsdon is eyeing another crack at the American Grand National with Hammersly Lake after the gelding capped a 24-1 Cartmel double for his Chipping Norton stables following Kilfinichen Bay’s success.

The ten-year-old gelding finished fifth in the Far Hills race last year and a return trip to New Jersey in October could be on the cards after he defied top weight in the feature Oakmere Homes Handicap Chase.

Brian Hughes sent the 4-1 chance ahead on the long run-in to pass the post three and three-quarter lengths clear of Princeton Royale, and claim the first prize of £25,116.

Longsdon had earlier employed Richard Johnson as Kilfinichen Bay (4-1 co-favourite) posted a 12th career success when taking a handicap chase over an extended three miles and a furlong.

Chastleton trainer John Gallagher landed a 53-1 double at Brighton courtesy of Harrison Stickle (5-1) and Junoesque (8-1).

Joey Haynes was on board as Harrison Stickle stormed home in a six-furlong handicap, while Charlie Bennett partnered Junoesque to victory in a mile handicap.
