To mark Oxford United’s 125th season, we are looking back at what made the news this week in three of the club's promotion-winning campaigns.

1964

OXFORD United manager Arthur Turner changed his selection plans for the visit of Third Division Walsall for the League Cup first round replay.

He was forced into a rethink by Walsall’s first win of the season, a convincing 4-1 success against QPR 4-1 at Fellows Park.

“I was contemplating four changes,” Turner said.

“It was not experimenting I had in mind, but resting of certain players. However, judging from reports Walsall moved well on Saturday and this prompted me to change my plans.”

Bill Calder scored four goals in a 6-1 win at the Manor.

1984

OXFORD United took revenge at Plough Lane to move into sixth spot in Division 2.

The U’s, beaten 3-1 by the Dons the previous season, reversed the score to create a club record 16 league games unbeaten.

Three goals of the highest quality from Bobby McDonald, John Aldridge and Kevin Brock finally sunk Wimbledon.

McDonald grabbed a brilliant free-kick from 35 yards and said: “That’s one of my better goals!

“We knew we could play like that and it was very satisfying.”

1995

DENIS Smith faced one of his toughest tasks since arriving at the Manor – solving the riddle of Oxford United’s disappearing goals.

United were toothless in a goalless draw at Hull City. It was a useful away point, but their almost non-existent attacking threat was a big disappointment for the fans who had travelled 400 miles to watch them and a major worry for Smith.

He said: “We got a better result than we managed here last year (a 3-1 defeat), but I thought we could’ve done a lot better.

“But there wasn’t a great deal to encourage supporters who had come a long way to watch us.”
