SWIMMING: Harkin takes the plaudits

Daniel Harkin was the star of the show as Witney opened their 2007 West Midlands Speedo League programme with a second place behind hosts Bromsgrove.

An excellent effort from the 15-year-old saw him smash the minute barrier in his 100m freestyle race with a much-reduced personal best, a performance which earned him the club's swimmer-of-the-match award.

Isobel Macdonald and Graham Cable took deserved wins in the ladies' backstroke and men's breaststroke respectively.

Anneliese Whiteley won in girls' 15 and under breaststroke, while Nathan Harkin and Adam Colling were never headed in winning their butterfly and breaststroke races in the boys' 13 and under group.

Result: 1 Bromsgrove 220pts, 2 Witney 182, 3 Wolverhampton 180, 4 Luton A 158, 5 Boldmere B 157, 6 Stafford Apex 148.

Other personal bests: H Brooke-Little (butterfly), M Colling (butterfly), J Possee (freestyle).
