Witney began their Home Counties League programme with an impressive second place at the first round gala at Temple Cowley Pools.

With Witney fielding an A and B team, there was plenty of inter-club rivalry in the event won by old foes Maxwell.

For the A team, Yolanda Speare continued to impress, and earned the club's swimmer-of-the-match award as she stormed home in the girls' 15 & under backstroke.

Adam Colling was the runner-up after winning the boys' 15 & under breaststroke.

Impressive efforts were also produced by stalwarts Chantal Clavaud (individual medley and backstroke), Joanne Trask (freestyle), Graham Cable (IM and breaststroke), Michael Adair (butterbutterfly and backstroke) and Piers Cardon (freestyle).

For the B team, Katie Hoare clocked a personal best in the girls' 13 & under breaststroke and freestyle, earning her the team's swimmer-of-the match prize.

The runner-up was Scott Webster following good swims in the under 15 boys' butterfly and breaststroke.

Result: 1 Maxwell 291pts, 2 Witney A 212, 3 City of Oxford 182, 4 Aylesbury 149, 5 Witney B 109, 6 Bicester 111.
