RUGBY UNION: Lamb bags a brace
11:30am Wednesday 25th April 2012 in Sport
Henry Lamb scored two tries as Witney secured a fifth-placed finish in South West 1 East with a 37-17 victory at Olney.
The fly half bagged a brace of individual efforts, but could not match his form from the kicking tee.
Olney laid siege to the Witney line early on and visiting full back Phil Gouldie came to the rescue with a try-saving tackle.
Witney began to ease into the game and after 21 minutes, it was Gouldie who made 40 metres before putting centre Thom Murton over, Lamb converting.
Olney replied with a try before Lamb ran in his first solo effort on 35 minutes, but missed the conversion from in front of the posts.
The host battled hard and equalised with a try on 47 minutes.
Witney flanker Tim Muller tore the defence apart before putting in wing Aaron Lambourne in for try No 3.
Olney equalised again with their third try, but a Lamb penalty and his converted second score made it 27-17.
Replacement Carl Strutt and lock Joe Rowles completed Witney’s try tally.
Had they not seen their form dip in January and February, Witney could well have finished in the top three.
But this still represented another step forward.
