CRICKET: Gross's heroics send Tew to the top

Great & Little Tew stormed to the top of the Cherwell League Division 1 table with a fortnight of the season to go after a seven-wicket victory at Buckingham Town.

Morning leaders Horspath had their match cut short by rain.

Tew scored at more than five runs an over to establish a four-point lead at the summit.

Town had been bowled out for 151 after Sam Keegan made 61 and Matt Woods took 3-42.

Ed Gross then smashed 56 not out in Tew’s 152-3, which came from only 28.3 overs.

l Buckingham Tn 5pts, Gt & L Tew 25 Rain stopped play just as the match between Oxford Dow-ns and Great Brickhill was bubbling to an exciting finish.

Downs were rolled over for 136 from 29 overs. Garth Davson took 6-42 as only Wes Bartlett (32) hung around.

Greg MacDonald (36) and Doug Aris (30) looked like winning the game for Brickhill, but Daryl Johnson took 3-9 to leave them on 127-7 from 37.3 overs when the rain came.

l Great Brickhill 9, Oxford Downs 12 In Division 2, already relegated Sandford St Martin, were grateful for the rain at home to Long Marston.

Neil Cox had hit 33 and James Beesley taken 4-38 as Sandford limped to 122-7 from 38.4 overs before the weather intervened.

l Sandford St Martin 6, Long Marston 6 Oxford Downs 2nd were in trouble on 85-5 from 32 against Wolverton Town, when the match was called off.

l Oxford Downs 2nd 6, Wolverton Tn 6 Banbury 3rd’s Ollie Mur-rey took 6-23 and Ross Free-man 4-29 to blow away Ship-ton-under-Wychwood 2nd for 63 and keep their Division 3 promotion hopes alive.

Earlier, Banbury had also struggled against Chris Panter (6-44) as they were bowled out for 137.

l Banbury 3rd 25, Shipton-under-Wychwood 2nd 5 Witney Mills, in ninth, therefore narrowed the gap slightly on Kingston in eighth although their crunch relegation clash with Chearsley was abandoned.

Mills made 111-5 from 40.2 overs before the rain arrived.
