CRICKET: Chadlington make history to lift cup
6:46pm Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport
Chadlington clinched their first success in the Airey Cup with a two-wicket victory over Garsington in a tense final at East and West Hendred.
The west Oxfordshire side, who have already clinched promotion to Division 1, are likely to be crowned Division 2 champions and, therefore, secure a double.
Freddie Simon was named man-of-the-match as his composed 43 not out steered Chadlington to 133-8 and victory, while Matt Bunney’s 6-18 turned the tide in their favour after a strong start from Garsington.
Chadlington won the toss and elected to field in bowler-friendly conditions aided by some morning rain.
There was drizzle at times during the match, but no delays resulted.
Qaiser Naveed top-scored with 49 to lead an early Garsington onslaught that saw them rack up 60 runs in seven overs.
But Bunny put the breaks on with his haul coming in ten miserly overs.
Steven Hunt provided good support with 3-51 as Garsington were dismissed for 131 in 38 overs.
This looked at least 20 runs short, but Garsington stuck to the task and with Gersh Whiteman leading the way, they had a real chance.
It could have gone either way, but Simon played the decisive role for Chadlington.
Chadlington add the Airey Cup to last season’s Telegraph Cup success.
