ATHLETICS: Carter wins ladies Mota-Vation title

Sophie Carter sealed her first Mota-Vation Series title with victory in the delayed first round at Charlton-on-Otmoor.

The 33-year-old Woodstock Harrier completed her fourth win in four races with a dominant display, so cannot be overhauled.

Carter clocked 24mins exac-tly for the 4.1-mile course, finishing 75 seconds ahead of second-placed Diane Moore (Headington Road Runners).

Abingdon Marathon champion Carter has been the leading Oxfordshire ladies runner on the roads in recent years, but this is the first season she has put together four qualifying races in the Mota-Vation Series.

Woodstock’s Jess Webb was the third senior lady home, recording 26.29 for fifth place overall.

Harriers’ ladies lie third in the team standings, but only ten points behind Alchester.

There was also a fine performance from 66-year-old Eynsham Road Runner Kate Williamson, who came 16th in 29.49.

This not only saw her win the vet 55 category, but also defeat all the vet 45 ladies as well!

In the men’s race, Wood-stock’s James Bolton again had to play second fiddle to Oxford City’s Darrell Bell-inger, who took first place in 20.28.

Bolton clocked 20.58 for second and is likely to secure that place in the series when the final race takes place in Oxford tomorrow.

With Brian O’Connor (22.47) tenth, Dave Cantwell (23.12) 13th and Kevin Game (23.26) 15th, Woodstock’s men produced a consistent display to maintain second place in the team standings.

l STEVE Naylor, from Wood-stock, finished sixth in the 5,000m B race at the BMC Grand Prix Final in Bedford.

Naylor, who missed the Mota-Vation race at Charlton, clocked 14mins 47.34secs, which was nine seconds off his personal best.
