WITNEY Road Runners A secured the Oxford Mail Cross Country League’s Men’s Division 2 title after the final round at Harwell.

The competition went down to the wire, with Witney finishing just 37 points ahead of Eynsham Road Runners A.

Witney also won the Oxfordshire senior men’s team title as the race incorporated the county championships.

Both clubs are now expected to compete in Division 1 next season.

Tegid Jones led Witney home in seventh place, clocking 31mins 12secs for the 8.5km course.

Justin Young (33.11) also breached the top 30 for Witney, while Eynsham were spearheaded by Mark Tyrrell (31.50) in 12th and Rob Storey (32.55) in 22nd.

James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers), who had already won the vet 40 men’s title, finished tenth in 31.36.

But he did add the Oxfordshire vet 40 crown to his well-stocked trophy cabinet, while Storey took bronze.

Woodstock’s Bryan Vaughan won the league’s vet 60 title by a single point from Oxford City’s Stewart Thorp.

Witney’s James Currah finished third in the under 17 boys’ standings and was runner-up in the Oxfordshire race.

The club’s men were second behind Headington Road Runners in the county veterans’ team event.

Eynsham’s Hannah Hale was the leading west Oxfordshire finisher in the ladies’ race over 6.5km, clocking 25.28 for ninth.

Hale came fifth overall in the senior ladies’ standings, one spot ahead of Witney’s Frankie Snare, who was 18th on the day in 26.14, Eynsham A won ladies’ Division 3 in dominant fashion, while the club’s Kate Williamson finished third in the vet 55 rankings.

In the Oxfordshire events, Hale took senior ladies’ bronze, while Eynsham secured silvers via Katherine Bates (vet 45) and Williamson and their veteran team.

  • SOPHIE Carter, from Woodstock, helped her first-claim club Belgrave Harriers retain their ladies’ national half marathon team title with a solid performance.

The event, which was part of the Reading Half Marathon, saw Carter finish 310th in 1hr 22mins 19secs.

She was Belgrave’s third lady home behind Tish Jones (1.12.56) and Sam Amend (1.19.36).
