Sophie Carter enjoyed her first win as a veteran athlete when winning the Potters ‘Arf Half Marathon at Hanley, near Stoke.

Carter, from Woodstock, who turned 35 last month, was the first lady home and 23rd overall.

The Belgrave Harriers athlete completed the hilly 13.1-mile course in 1hr 25mins 3secs to take victory from Cheadle’s Rebecca Harrison (1.26.15).

And her peformance was all the more impressive as she has battled back from a stress fracture in her foot.

“It’s a good course, but incredibly tough,” said Carter. “I’ve only done a four-miler since I was injured, so I didn’t know what to expect.”

Carter warmed up for the race by finishing second in round two of the Mota-Vation Series at Bletchingdon.

She completed the 4.26-mile course in 25.46 for 41st place overall, with Diane Moore (Headington Road Run-ners) the first lady home in 24.57.

Woodstock Harriers’ James Bolton was second in 22.18.

Clubmate Bryan Vaughan made it two vet 60 wins from two race, finishing 59th in 26.34.

Meanwhile, Witney Road Runners’ Tegid Jones stormed to victory in the Chiltern Chase 10K.

Jones triumphed by more than a minute in the multi-terrain event, which starts and finished in Ewelme.

The 38-year-old finished in 35mins 48secs ahead of Ben Barwick (Winchester & District), who clocked 37.03.

James Bolton was Woodstock Harriers’ leading man at the Otmoor Challenge, finishing fifth, completing the multi-terrain half marathon 1hr 18mins 56secs.
