Oxford Downs’ troubled start to the Cherwell League Division 1 season continued on Saturday when they suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Thame Town.

Downs expected to be challenging towards the top of the table, but are yet to win with a third of the season gone.

Only Wes Bartlett of their batsmen is in form, and they have bowled out their opponents just once.

Downs batted second in their first five games with no success, but had first dig at Thame.

They came unstuck against John Maynard, who took 7-60 to leave the visitors reeling on 130 all out.

Opening batsman Bartlett, held the innings together with 45.

Town skipper Mike Higgs, who has enjoyed success with the ball this season, played a captain’s innings of 53 to ensure his side gained maximum points and climbed four places in the table.

Thame have limited ambitions this summer as they adjust to life back in the Cherwell after a decade in the Home Counties Premier League structure.
