Great & Tew captain Andy Harris is confident they can reach the next round after being handed a last-16 clash at Somerset champions Ashbrittle.

It was the perfect response to Tew’s 153-run thrashing at Finchampstead which saw them hit the bottom of the Serious Cricket Home Coun-ties Premier League Division 2 table the previous day.

But they will have to do it without regular wicket-keeper Ashley Hubbert who was ruled out for at least three weeks with a badly-gashed knee.

Hubbert suffered the injury while diving in to make his ground on a third run in the win at Parley on Sunday.

Play was held up for 15 minutes as he was helped off before being taken to hospital where the wound was stitched.

Harry Smith took his place behind the stumps.

“It was a great performance by the boys,” said Harris.

“We bounced back very strongly from a disappointing defeat on Saturday.

“I think we will approach the game at Ashbrittle the same as we did at Parley.

“We don’t know a lot about them, so we’ll have to do a bit of research.

“It’s quite refreshing to play people we know nothing about.

“As long as we show the same application we should be okay.”

Meanwhile, Harris said Hubbert was gutted by the injury.

He added: “Ashley’s hobbling around with six stitches in his knee.

“Thankfully, we had Harry who jumped in as wicket-keeper.

“Ashley’s stitches come out in three weeks and we’ll take it from there.

“He’s disappointed because he is going to miss a few week’s cricket, but he’s plea-sed we got through.”

In Sunday’s game, Tew stormed into the last 16 with a 121-run victory.

But the gloss was taken off by Hubbert’s injury.

Hubbert, who had to retire hurt on 44, had featured in an opening stand of 92 with Joe White after Tew had chosen to bat first on a dry pitch.

White scored 53 off 75 balls.

Harry Smith chimed in with 29 off 26 deliveries as the visitors seemed on target to pass 200. But Hubbert’s injury came in the middle of a collapse in which six wickets fell for 21 runs.

Robbie Shurmer’s late flurry took Tew to 189-8 from their 40 overs. He blitzed the early Parley batting with three wickets in two overs as they slumped to 3-3.

They never recovered and their hopes were ended when their Sri Lankan hope Roshan Embalalgama fell to Ian Bryan.

Bryan picked up 3-8 in 7.3 deadly overs as the home side’s tail crashed to be all out for 68 in the 28th over.

Shurmer finished with 3-24, while Harris and White each picked up two wickets.
