Great & Little Tew skipper Andy Harris saluted the efforts of his side as they beat Ashbrittle to reach the national quarter-finals of the Davidstow Village Cup.
Harry Smith hit a century as Tew won by 75 runs at Somerset champions Ashbr-ittle to set up a trip to Cornish side Roche on Sunday, July 20.
“It’s a great result for the boys,” said Harris.
“It’s always difficult playing against a side you know little about.
“It was a good batting performance that set up the win.”
Regular wicket-keeper Ash-ley Hubbert, who was a doubt after injuring a knee in the last round at Parley, was cleared to play though Robbie Catling took over behind the stumps.
In Sunday’s game, Smith hammered a destructive 109 to take Tew to 241-6 off their 40 overs after they won the toss and elected to bat at the Somerset venue, which was situated on top of a hill.
The Oxfordshire champions had been in trouble early on after being reduced to 17-2, before Smith was joined by Marcus Jeacock (30) in a 149-run third-wicket stand which set them on the way to a formidable total.
Smith’s dominant innings included 12 fours and three sixes.
Tew’s accurate attack, led by Lawrence Brock (3-19) and Harris (3-31), then ensured Ashbrittle were always behind the run rate.
Despite conceding a whopping 43 extras, Tew held their opponents to 166-9.
Harris believes his side will face an even tougher examination when they travel to Cornwall, the conquerors of Hampshire side Hambledon, in two week’s time.
He said: “It’s a four-and-a-half hour trip which makes it tough anyway.
“Although we don’t know much about them, they beat Hambleton, who are a fairly reasonable Southern League side, so we will have to be wary of them.”
