CRICKET: All-rounder Watkins stars for Downs

SIMON Watkins took 5-60 and struck an unbeaten 62 to see Oxford Downs to a convincing seven-wicket win in their Cherwell League Division 1 game at Banbury 2nd.
Only Anish Desai (41) and Steve Beck (63no) made much progress for Banbury, who had to settle for a total of 190-8 from their 53 overs.
Downs lost three quick wickets, but Watkins joined Andrew Buckingham (77no) to take their side to a straightforward victory with four overs to spare.

Great & Little Tew dominated Cumnor for the whole game, but could not quite dislodge the hosts’ last pair.
Matt Taylor (50), Joe White (44), Lloyd Brock (43) and Curtly Slatter (42) all had the Cumnor fielders chasing leather on a hot day as Tew racked up a useful 233-7.
Joe Shillaker was the pick of the home attack with 3-85.
All-rounder White took 4-32 and Matthew Woods 4-85 to take Tew within one wicket of victory.
But Carl Thompson’s defiant 53 not out and some late resistance helped Cumnor cling on at 170-9.

Amin Rafiq pouched 5-13 as Sandford St Martin were 94 all out at Ox-ford Downs 2nd in Division 2.
Chris Thompson’s 47 was the only batting performance of note for the visitors, while Justin Cantrill also bowled well to finish with 3-11.
Will Watts (34no) and James Ellwood (32no) turned the run chase into a procession as Downs romped home by nine wickets.

Shipton-under Wychwood 2nd suffered a 42-run defeat against Bicester & North Oxford in Division 3.
Dan Murphy (42), James Rimmer (38), Kevin Hicks (34) and Darren Bartlett (32) helped them post 219-9.
Then Richard Simpson took 3-25 and Safian Muhammad 3-50 as Shipton slipped to 177 all out.
For Shipton, Liam Hare took 3-36 and Jason Hunt 3-69.

Pete Claridge (45) and Malcolm Evans (51) provided the backbone to Witney Mills’ 182-8 at Cropredy, Mike Amos-Simpson taking 3-27.
Joe Fox (87) and Jamie Jennings (63) saw Cropredy cruise to 188-3 in only 33 overs.

Piers Myatt (6-22) and Liam Manley (4-38) joined forces for Great & Little Tew 2nd to dismiss Cumnor 2nd for 61 in Division 4.
Earlier Tew had made 236 through Rob Garrett (52), Manley (41) and Kevin Taylor (31). Pierre du Plessis took 3-28 and Steve Slade 3-59.

There were 536 runs for the loss of 11 wickets in Hanborough’s draw at Oxford 3rd.
Matt Gorman (93), Matt Neilson (70) and Andy Oliver (52) helped Hanborough to 300-4 dec.
Oxford’s 236-7, saw Miles Picknett hit 100 and Ali Shah 39, while Will Potter took 3-43.
