CHARLBURY Town Under 12s were crowned champions at the national Precision Pass tournament, held at the King Power Stadium, home of newly-crowned Premier League champions Leicester City.

A 2-0 victory in the final over Higham Town Colts, from Northamptonshire, was enough to secure Charlbury the title.

Few would have imagined it as Town scraped out of their group with one victory and two defeats.

They needed penalties to overcome Cleethorpes-based Discoveries Allstars in the round of 16 following a 0-0 draw, triumphing 2-1 in the shoot-out, thanks to two superb fingertip saves from goalkeeper Joe Newton-Grain.

Freddie Leydon’s last-minute goal gave them a 1-0 win over Colron Colts, from Sutton Coldfield, in the quarter-final and Charlbury began to find their stride.

A place in the final was confirmed courtesy of a comfortable 3-0 win over Costello Leopards from Hull, including a first goal for the club from defender Oliver Ball.

And there were trophy celebrations after the final as goals from Isaac Harrington and Leydon were enough to secure a 2-0 success.

Harrington’s stunning strike put Charlbury in front early on and Newton-Grain preserved the advantage with a top-notch save as Higham began to mount the pressure.

But victory was assured when Leydon netted his third goal in as many games, calmly finishing from close range.
