HEARING Oxford United supporters sing his name means the world to Ricardinho – even if the rest of the squad had to explain it to him.

The Brazilian left back has been quick to become a favourite on the terraces, where fans have responded with a chant in his honour.

It is a first for Ricardinho, who turned 33 on Saturday, and was serenaded by the other U’s players when he arrived at training on Monday.

He said: “When I came in this morning the players started to sing it.

“I didn’t understand and then they explained to me the fans made this song.

“It was good, I’m so happy to hear they are satisfied with my performance and I wish to give them much better things.

“I’ve never had it before.”

The warm welcome has helped the settling in process for a player whose previous action came in Azerbaijan with Gabala.

While he has rapidly become a popular member of the squad, it helps having familiar faces around.

United’s newest addition, Agon Mehmeti, was a former teammate at Malmo, alongside midfielder Ivo Pekalski and boss Pep Clotet.

The striker is being given time to acclimatise, but when he is unleashed on English football, Ricardinho is expecting him to thrive.

He said: “I like his style.

“He’s good with the ball and when he finishes he can do it with both legs. He’s quick and I think he can help us a lot.

“I also love being here with the fans and the players. It’s a nice atmosphere.

“I think it goes easier if you are patient, work hard and like what you’re doing.

“We are training every day and try to do something else. We try to be good friends with the ball – I like that.”
