KARL Robinson has become Oxford United’s new manager – ending the club’s 59-day search for Pep Clotet’s replacement.

The 37-year-old signed a contract which will keep him at the club until summer 2020, having left Charlton Athletic by mutual consent this morning.

He said: “It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours in some ways.

“I’m just glad to be here now.

“I’ve been here for the last three or four hours finalising a few things. It wasn’t something that was a done deal, far from it.

“It’s nice it’s all done and signed, I’m really excited now, I really am.”

Robinson had been the odds-on favourite for more than a week, but agreeing an exit from the Addicks – who are seven places above the U’s in the Sky Bet League One table but are close to being taken over – proved problematic.

While the former Liverpool Academy coach offered to resign twice last week, his exit from the Valley was only confirmed this morning.

Robinson will meet the players for the first time tomorrow as they prepare to face Portsmouth on Sunday.

“This is a good football club,” he said.

“A takeover has gone on as well and the prospect of what may be an exciting year coming up and all the training ground plans and the changes that are going to start occurring here.

“When you sit down and start listening, it’s an exciting challenge.

“There are certain people we hope can come through the door and give us what we need to push on next season.

“This didn’t take much thinking about.”

Despite being 37, Robinson has more than 400 games under his belt at Milton Keynes Dons and Charlton.

He arrives with plenty of experience in League One, having reached the play-offs twice and won automatic promotion during his six seasons at Stadium MK.
