FOOTBALL: Dobson's double is key for Witney

James Dobson notched a double as Witney Town continued their winning start to their Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division campaign with a 3-2 win at home to Wokingham & Emmbrook on Saturday.

Early on, Christian Perkins had the chance to put Witney a goal up, but his weak shot failed to trouble Garry Ausberry in the Wokingham goal.

The deadlock was broken on 33 minutes when James Dobson’s super free-kick flew into the net.

Minutes later, their summer capture from Ardley United, Ryan Brooks broke his duck with a typical close-range finish following a goalmouth scramble.

Although Billy Elgar clawed one back on 53 minutes, Dobson doubled his tally just after the hour mark with another free-kick for 3-1.

With 15 minutes left, Wokingham scored a second after sloppy defending allowed Luke Lee to cut the deficit.

Conor McDonagh had a 40-yard shot tipped round a post and Nick Thorne hit the bar from just inside the box as Witney finished strongly.

Steve Olphert and Sean Mckeon bagged a brace apiece in Clanfield’s 4-1 win at home to New College Swindon in Division 1 West. Gio Wrona replied. Carterton won 3-2 at home to Lambourn Sports.

Mark Norridge, Michael Duerden and Lewis Brownhill netted for Carterton, with James Mandry and Matt Pedder replying.

Old Woodstock Town were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Purton. Goals by Danny Bone and Dan Green for Woodstock were cancelled out by Richard Crocker and Steve Avenall.

North Leigh Res crashed to a 7-1 defeat at Brimscombe & Thrupp.

Lee Pritchard (2), Ben Snook, Adam Snook, Michael Beckingham and Craig Cole did the damage with Alfie Saunders netting for North Leigh from the penalty spot.
