FOOTBALL – Brize spot-on to wrap up double
 |
| SENT OFF: Minster's Andy Maudsley |
Brize Norton completed a Premier Division and cup double as they saw off Freeland 3-1 on penalties in the final of the Fred Ford Centenary Cup on Sunday, writes Anthony Barlow.
John Curtis gave Brize the lead in the first half when he swung a corner straight into the goal, although Chris Marshall may have got the final touch.
However, John Leader equalised for Freeland in the second half.
John Smales then put Brize back in front early in extra time, before Freeland were awarded a last-minute penalty when veteran Mark Jewell caught a Freeland player in the face with a high boot.
Dave Tarr fired home the spot-kick to make it 2-2 and take the game to a penalty shoot-out.
Man-of-the-match Mark Hedges saved three of Freeland's penalties to secure Brize's double.
Witney Royals secured the Division 1 title with a decisive 4-2 victory over Minster Lovell in the winner-takes-all clash.
Royals were rewarded for a bright start as Chris Catchpole headed home a long Steven Green throw.
Minster equalised when Luke Chadwick handled in the box and Dan Bishop slotted home the penalty.
Chadwick quickly made amends by heading Royals ahead again, before Steve Brasier made it 3-1.
The title seemed to be beyond Minster at this point, but in the second half, Brad Bryant slotted home to make it 3-2 and ensure a tense finish.
Royals were awarded a penalty late on, which Richie Benham netted, before Minster's Andy Maudsley was sent off for a second caution five minutes from time.
