FOOTBALL: Ten-man Carterton keep up the pace

Carterton brushed off the dismissal of Joe Wood to stretch their unbeaten run in Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 West with a 3-1 home win against Oxfordshire rivals Letcombe on Saturday.

The hosts went ahead after only six minutes when Kris Redford’s corner was forcefully headed in by Chris Mills.

At the other end, keeper Mike Hedges made a brilliant point-blank save from James Beard.

On 35 minutes, though, Hedges was beaten when Adam Bruce fired home a penalty to level for the visitors after Wood was penalised for holding.

Carterton regained the lead in injury time.

A corner from Redford was headed past the Letcombe keeper Ben Stone by Jason Francis.

Early in the second half, Carterton were reduced to ten men when Wood was dismissed for picking up a second booking for pulling back Bruce.

Hedges denied Elliot Baldwin, before Carterton took a 3-1 lead on 57 minutes. George Seacole went past two defenders before pulling the ball back for James Fleming to sidefoot past Stone.

Michael Duerden had the chance to increase Carterton’s advantage as the hosts cruised home.

On Saturday, Carterton host Fairford Town in the third round of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Cup.
