Carterton Rangers lifted the Oxfordshire John Fathers Junior Shield for the first time with a dramatic 3-2 win against Premier Division side Charlbury Town.

The previous Saturday, Carterton lost 1-0 at Combe which ended their Division 2 promotion bid.

Carterton, who beat a number of higher divisions on their way to the final, took the lead in the first half through Billy Hales.

However, five minutes into the second half, Charlbury’s Craig McCallum scored twice to overturn the deficit.

Lee Keyes had the chance to level the tie, but missed an open goal from four yards after rounding the keeper.

However, James Barker made no mistake minutes later, firing the ball through a crowd of players and into the net to level it up.

Chris Balfe won it with a rocket shot from outside the area as Rangers.

“It made up for missing out on promotion,” said Rangers secretary Bill Webster.

“It was a bit touch and go in the second half, but they did well to keep their heads up.”
