THE one moment of true quality sealed North Leigh’s 1-0 victory at home to Oxfordshire rivals Wantage Town on Saturday.

It came in the 47th minute of a Evo-Stik Southern League clash on a heavy pitch, with players slipping and sliding on the greasy surface in a nondescript first half.

North Leigh forward Jon Else received a pass, moved forward a few yards, cut inside a defender and unleashed a stunning right foot shot from 25 yards that arrowed into the top corner of Wantage keeper Eddie Cavanagh’s net, giving him no chance.

Wantage, struggling near the bottom of Division 1 South & West, seemed stunned by this goal out of nothing but picked themselves up and moved forward at every opportunity in search of an equaliser.

Visiting defender James Glover tried a snap shot from 15 yards that home keeper James Foster saved with ease.

Then Else nearly scored his second goal but his header from close range cannoned off the keeper’s knees.

The Millers had a great chance to put the game to bed as a Jamie Cook breakaway and pass saw Cavanagh make a double save from Else.

At the other end the home goal had a couple of very narrow escapes in injury time as Wantage strove for the equaliser.

One shot went inches wide, which was followed by a point-blank save by Foster from Wantage sub Elliot Powell.

Included in the Millers squad was defender Ben Brown, signed the previous day from Cirencester Town and who made a brief appearance late on.

This Saturday North Leigh visit Larkhall Athletic.
