NORTH Leigh lost their 100 per cent record after falling to a 3-2 home defeat at the hands of previously-winless AFC Totton in Division 1 South & West.

The hosts almost snatched a dramatic point after trailing 3-0 after 89 minutes, but John Brough’s side left it too late.

North Leigh fell behind in the eighth minute when referee Stephen Oakley adjudged a home player had fouled a Totton striker in the box and Dave Allen scored from the spot.

Eric Odhiambo came close to levelling, but his shot was deflected narrowly wide.

The Millers started the second half brightly, but on 50 minutes went 2-0 down as Pat Wilson headed home.

North Leigh pushed forward at every opportunity, but conceded a third goal on 78 minutes when Allen fired in from a pinpoint right-wing cross.

Callum McNish reduced the deficit in the 89th minute, before Roger James set up a grandstand finale when he made it 3-2.

But although North Leigh created a couple of half-chances in the remaining minutes to salvage a surprise point, they ran out of time.

North Leigh: Thompson, Platt, Steedman, Turk (R James 77), White, Hole, Odhiambo, Osborne-Ricketts, Woodley, Cook (Seacole 63), A Woodley, M Williams (McNish HT).

Subs not used: D James, J Murphy

The Millers went into Saturday’s game full of confidence, having beaten Oxfordshire neighbours Wantage Town 4-1 in midweek.

Jamie Cook gave the hosts a sixth-minute lead. However, Wantage drew level on 36 minutes when Mark Francis was brought down in the box, and got up to fire the resulting penalty past Connor Thompson.

North Leigh were awarded a spot-kick of their own three minutes into the second period after handball.

Although Eric Odhiambo’s penalty was saved by Wantage keeper Eddie Cavanagh, he was on hand to slot home the rebound.

When Cook was fouled in the area a third penalty was awarded, the same player getting to his feet to find the top-left corner.

And Odhiambo completed the scoring in injury time with his second of the game.

The Millers, who visited Mangotsfield United last night, are in early FA Cup action this Saturday.

Brough’s men visit Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division leaders Thame United in the preliminary round.

The winners will be away to Crawley Down Gatwick or Corinthian-Casuals in first round qualifying on September 3.
