CLANFIELD 85’s dream debut run in the FA Youth Cup continued as they knocked out Hemel Hempstead on penalties.

The hosts won the shoot-out 5-3 after 120 minutes had failed to produce a goal at Radcot Road.

It was Clanfield’s third win in the competition, earning a place in the first round proper, where they will host Cambridge City on November 2.

They had to do it the hard way after losing skipper Zac Oliver to a second yellow card with six minutes of normal time left.

Both sides had chances to win the tie, but the deadlock meant it was settled on spot kicks.

Home goalkeeper Luke Haley saved the visitors’ third penalty, which was enough to win the tie as Frankie Cato, Harvey Savin, Brendan Neale, Jake Denton and Callum Davies all held their nerve.

Clanfield’s first team were edged out 1-0 at home to Easington Sports in Uhlsport Hellenic League Division One West.

The draining FA Youth Cup game meant that several players were unavailable on Saturday.

Clanfield goalkeeper Jamie Zoldan denied Andrew Stidder, but was beaten when good work down the left set up Mike Spaull left with a simple tap-in at the far post.

Zoldan remained the busier of the two goalkeepers in the second half.

Oliver went close with a cross-shot which just evaded the incoming Karl Roberts at the far post.

Easington’s Tom Smith was sent off for a high tackle on Roberts, but the hosts could not take advantage of their numerical superiority late on.
