FOOTBALL: Champs North Leigh get hands on trophy

North Leigh captain Stuart Huxley receives the Hellenic League Championship Shield from general manager of the league, Brian King

Sport Italia Hellenic League

North Leigh were presented the Premier Division championship shield at Eynsham Park on Friday, as long-serving chairman Pete King looked forward to promotion to the British Gas Business Southern League.

North Leigh have had a remarkable season in their centenary year, lifting the Oxfordshire Senior Cup at the Kassam Stadium, before clinching the Hellenic League title on goal difference from Almondsbury.

They now face a wait before learning where they will be playing next season, with the FA holding meetings next week to resolve all the promotion and relegation issues.

But King doesn't care what division of the Southern League they are placed into.

He said: "We've worked out the mileage, and there's not a lot of difference between the Midland Division and the South West Division," he said.

"The only disappointing thing is that we won't be playing Oxford City next season.

"But I would like to congratulate them on their promotion to the Premier Division.

"We're just delighted to have reached the Southern League. It's something we have worked towards for several years, and after missing out so many times, this feels just fantastic."
