Lotus depurty chief principal Federico Gastaldi is confident the Enstone-based team can deliver strong results at this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix.

So far, Romain Grosjean has scored 16 points, with teammate Pastor Maldonado yet to trouble the scorers, but Gastaldi is optimistic they will deliver, having failed to get a point at Monaco.

“In Monaco we were heading in the right direction with practice and qualifying, it was just the race itself where we didn’t get the results we wanted,” said Gastaldi.

“Pastor had a technical issue and with Romain there was an issue with another driver. That is racing.

“In Montréal the team has a good history and Romain has gone very well there in the past.

“We know that this year’s car is good, so we’re aiming – and ready – for a strong result.”

Grosjean is hoping for a repeat of his result at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve three years ago.

He said: “I have very good memories from 2012 when I went from seventh on the grid to my first second place in Formula 1.

“It was a really great day and it was really a strong team result as we used a one-stop strategy to get on the podium.

“The last couple of years haven’t been so good for me. I had to retire from last year’s race and in 2013 we struggled in the wet weather conditions.

“The circuit is not used for the rest of the year, so the grip will change a lot – something we’ll have to adapt to – and the weather can also be tricky.”

Meanwhile, Maldonado is hoping he can break his points duck for the season.

“The circuit in Canada has its own challenges, but there’s nothing to say we shouldn’t be fast there,” he said. “This year’s car has felt good so I’ll be pushing for points.

“At most of the races this year we’ve looked strong all through the weekend and it’s been the final piece of crossing the finish line in the points which has been out of reach.

That’s what we want this weekend.”

Jordan Albert moved into the top five of the Duo BRDC Formula 4 Championship after bagging his biggest points haul of the season – including his third podium at Silverstone.

Albert, 18, from the Chipping Norton-based Sean Walkinshaw Racing team, is 19 points off the top three in fifth.

Starting from fifth on the grid, Albert got round seven off to a flier, leaping into second ahead of Harri Newey.

He was later shuffled back to sixth before he profited from a tangle involving Newey and Riki Christodoulou to go third, where he stayed.

He came fifth in the second race and fourth in the last.

“It was obviously good to be back on the podium again this weekend, although a bit disappointing we couldn’t get the win in race two as Jordan had the pace for sure,” said Walkinshaw.

“Zubair Hoque qualified well again and made some good progress, it wasn’t the easiest of weekends but he still scored well and stayed in the championship top ten which is good.

“In race three, the tyres were just wrecked at the end. The guys at the front had better tyres available than we did, so for Jordan to finish in fourth was a good result.

“We’ve made up some good ground in the points, the championship is definitely back on for us now.”

The series resumes over the weekend of July 11-12 at Snetterton.
